Maybe you or your child or just someone you know is still in high school or even in middle school. It is never too early to prepare to receive and higher education to further your success in life. Have a better education usually means a higher salary and studies have proven that those with a college degree earn more than those with just a high school diploma or a G.E.D.

So now that we are clear that more education means more money down the road in life, what do you need to make that happen? First off we need to make sure we clear up some misunderstandings. Not all colleges are the same, each and every college or university is the same. Each one has their own strengths that they excel in, so before you decide where to attend you first need to decide on what you wish to major in. Once you’ve decided on what you want to be in your future then you can decide on which campus you wish to attend. And don’t limit yourself to just 1 school. Try to pick a variety of places that you might want to attend because the more you try to shoot for, the more chance you will have into being accepted into some college or university.

As mentioned before, not all colleges and universities are the same. This also applies for how much attending a certain university or college charges a student to attend their classes. Some places like community colleges charge a very low amount for their classes and private universities charge extremely high priced amount for just a quarter. But don’t get discouraged, there are still ways to pay for them. By applying for scholarships, student aid programs or getting student loans, you can pay for an education that you could have only dreamed of.

So now that you’ve decided on what you wish to learn about, which campus to attend and how to pay for that education, what’s left? Everything else. Before you can even go and get that Bachelor’s you first need to quality before your application is to be even reviewed by the committee. And that means your high school education. High school is usually where the acceptance committee will usually start looking at. From your academics to your extra curricular activities they will account into everything that you may have done during your high school year to see if you are even eligible to attend their most prestigious place of learning.

Academics usually mean your grades that you received in your high school classes. From math to English, you first need to learn the basics before you can try and learn the higher forms of these subjects. Academics also include the tests that just about most universities require like the SATs and ACTs. There are after-school programs for students to attend to learn and how to analyze these tests so they can score higher for these exams.

Colleges and universities also pay attention on what activities you may have been involved in during your high school year. From school clubs to after-school community service programs that you may have volunteered for, they will take into account on what kind of activities you participate in to have a much better understanding of you.

So now that you understand the gist of what needs to be accomplished, get out there and jump start your brain of yours so that you can make a better person of yourself.

So you’re thinking of learning a new language. Good for you! Being proficient in more than one language is quite an accomplishment. If you’re interested in learning something new, but aren’t quite sure which language to take up, you might want to consider Spanish.

Why Spanish? There are plenty of reasons. Did you know 400 million people speak Spanish making it the fourth most spoken language in the world? It’s also the second most spoken language in America. Besides being the official language of 21 countries, Spanish is an official language of many international organizations including the United Nations. If you decide to learn Spanish, doorways and new opportunities will open up all around you. For instance, many businesses prefer bilingual employees to deal with their Spanish-speaking clientele.

Did you know that Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn? This is because Spanish is pronounced almost phonetically making it easy to sound out the words. It’s also similar to other languages such as Portuguese and Italian. Once you master one language, the others won’t be far behind. Spanish and English words also share many of the same Latin roots so it should be easy to learn.

If you live in a neighborhood with a large Hispanic population, learning Spanish will only make life easier. What better way to get to know your neighbors than to learn their nativelanguage? Learning the language will only lead to a better cultural understanding. Especially if you’re now able to watch Spanish language television shows and read Spanish newspapers.

If those aren’t enough reasons to learn Spanish, here’s one more. If you learn Spanish, it will also broaden your horizons internationally. Travelling will be much easier if you decide to go to a Spanish speaking country. Wouldn’t you rather leave that English to Spanish dictionary at home?

Regardless of the situation, it is hard to watch a loved one throw their future away.

When you see a loved one end their high school education, it is a difficult thing to watch. Especially when it is your child. Many young people may not understand the importance of a high school education to their future and can only see the difficulty it may cause in their current daily life. It may be they don’t get along with other students or even the teachers. Regardless of the situation, it is hard to watch a loved one throw their future away.

A high school education does not need to be received in the traditional high school setting. With today’s technology, there are many ways in which to get an education. One of the best means of receiving a high school education is to participate in an online education program. Many are low-priced and offer choices to the participating student.

Online high school education provides the student access to as many classes as they need to receive their high school diploma. Whether the student needs credit in science, social studies, English, math, or a foreign language, an online education program will have them available. These online high school education classes also allow the student to learn at their own pace. If the student is working during the day, they can access their classes in the evening. The fact is online education makes it easy and convenient for the student.

When helping your loved one to choose an online high school education program, you’ll want to make sure it is accredited. This means the school has been officially recognized as a qualified education program and your student will receive a quality education from it. You’ll also want to make sure that your loved one has all the details and understands how the program works. You don’t want them to feel frustrated again and quit halfway through their program. Providing all the details up front is important.

If your loved one has not received their high school education, provide them with the opportunity and support they made to finish out their high school education. It may be they are simply too scared or lacking the confidence to continue. When you give them the encouragement, they will thank you for it and greatly appreciate all of the support you gave them.

A quality education is one of the most important things you can give yourself in your life, and by law, the right of every person. Of course, with the skyrocketing amount of money that you have to pay to even be able to attend a post secondary education, a lot of students are despairing. Furthermore, even if you did get a degree, you have to consider that there are already plenty of people out there with the exact same degree already and, in addition, two years of experience under their belts, and they’ll be vying against you for jobs as well.

1. Grant Scholarships

There are literally thousands of dollars available for those willing to put in a little effort. Keep in mind that scholarships don’t have to be paid back, but at the same time, you can lose your scholarship entirely if you don’t keep your grades up.

2. Hispanic Scholarships

If you are Hispanic, you can enjoy several advantages when applying for scholarships and financial aid. The scholarship program just to make education a reality for all Hispanic people. There are scholarships available on a federal level but also individual schools issue scholarships for deserving students. It’s important to educate yourself and research all your different options.

3. What Scholarships Are Available?

There any many different subjects students can get a scholarship in. When picking a subject it’s important to be sure that this is a subject that is right for you and that you are interested in. Scholarships are available for most types of programs, some of the most popular include:

- Math
- Science
- Engineering
- Arts
- Business, especially MBA programs
- Entrepreneurship

4. Do You Qualify?

Of course, not all Hispanic people will immediately be able to apply for a scholarship. Like most scholarships, there are some additional strings attached that you need to satisfy. First, you must be a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident in the United States. Obviously, you must be Hispanic – but there are additional conditions on what defines Hispanic as well. For example, at least one of your parents must be purely Hispanic, or alternatively, both of your parents must be half Hispanic. Next, you aren’t going to get a scholarship unless you are enrolled in a full-time school or university. Yes, that’s right, they won’t even give you the scholarship until after you’ve already been accepted to your program of study. So it’s important to prepare before youapply for a scholarship.

It is very true that Caucasians are more affected by sun damage (photo aging) and the associated visible signs of aging more than many other ethnic groups, but the number of anti-aging dermatological procedures being performed on people with diverse ethnic backgrounds has been on the rise in the past few years.

Lack of protection from the sun accelerates the aging process for these patients in the same way it does in Caucasians, just at a slower rate. This may be due to the fact that paler skin is more susceptible to burning, which shows that the rays of the sun are more disruptive to this skin.

In 2005, the total number of American plastic surgery patients of ethnic backgrounds, which includes those who utilize this for reasons other than anti aging, there was a total of 2.3 million out of the total 10.2 million surgeries and non invasive treatments performed. This total reflects a total increase of 65% for procedures performed on ethnic patients. Hispanics and African Americans both had an increase of 67% over the 2004 numbers while Asians had a 58% increase.

These increases may be due to a number of factors which affect all minority groups. These factors include: more acceptance of plastic surgery and other dermatological enhancement treatments, increased awareness of the benefits of the wide range of dermatological treatments, and the rising economic power of ethnic groups. The increase in awareness most likely stems from stories about breakthroughs in the field both in newspapers and on television news and from the informative television shows which often look in detail at various forms and techniques in the dermatological processes which are now available to patients.

Today, approximately 20% of all dermatological procedures in America are performed on a variety of racial and ethnic groups; some of the most requested procedures for this group are treatments which are specifically designed to reverse damage caused by the sun. People of all races are affected by sun damage. Effects from the full spectrum of ultraviolet light are mainly photo aging and skin cancer. The rise in anti aging among ethnic groups does not stop with dermatological procedures; there has also been a steady increase in sales of anti aging the skin care products which are specifically marketed with ethnicity in mind.

Skin is affected more according to the level of pigmentation in it. The darker the skin (or the more amount of pigment in the skin), the less anti aging processes and skin care products are needed. Black skin absorbs only about 18% of the sun’s rays and this percentage rises up to about 56% in very pale skin.

Of all plastic surgery, Hispanics have the highest percentage (9%) in those utilizing the many anti aging procedures and skin care products. African Americans rate second highest (8%), while Asians represent the smallest percentage (4%) of people who need to address the visible signs of aging. Laser procedures seem to be the most commonly requested treatments for sun damage in most races, while the highest cosmetic treatment request of all anti aging cosmetic procedures is the injection of Botox which reduces wrinkles. Chemical peels run a close second to the famous Botox injections. The success of treatments remains steady no matter the skin pigmentation but changes in technique are required when performed on more pigmented skin.

No matter your race, choosing the right plastic surgeon is of the utmost importance, especially when dealing with ethnic skin (which is more susceptible to scaring). Research your potential surgeons, paying close attention to their experience with plastic surgery done on ethnic skin (if you have ethnic skin). Listen to what he has to say. If he is promising you the world on a silver platter, he is more interested in your money than anything, while plastic surgery can greatly affect your anti aging desires, it cannot give you the face of your youth. Ask others about their surgeons; how did they feel about the results, did it take multiple surgeries (or need any corrective surgeries), were they comfortable with the surgeon, and were they referred to the surgeon by someone else who had a good experience with the doctor?

Who are the Miao?

Inhabiting the mountainous south and southwestern China, the Miao like to enjoy themselves during their happy holidays. They sing, dance, and prepare big meals to feast on with friends and neighbors. Holidays are also the best time for young people to look for their partners. Girls are especially beautiful on such occasions, with their huge sets of silver jewelry and embroidered garments.

The Miao New Year

Because they follow the lunar calendar, the Miao New Year can come in September, October, or November. With the New Year coming, the Miao will give their house a thorough clean, and prepare some specific dishes like bean curd, sausage, like sticky rice paste. Women are happy with sewing new clothing for their family, especially for their children.

All people stay up until midnight, and then they bring dragons to their home with firecrackers lighted. A ceremony will be held at dawn to worship their forefathers. The nose of a cow is put on some wine to prove that people have respect for this hardworking animal. After breakfast, people go to see their neighbors and say to each other "Happy New Year!".

On the first two days of the New Year, the Miao don't do any cleaning work at home, and they are forbidden to chop wood on the mountains. Women don't need to cook, but men have to do that.

Girls dress up with beautiful silver ornaments and embroidered garments to go to meet the boys. Some young fellows even go to other villages by walking to take part in various social activities.

The Miao fully enjoy themselves during 9 days of new year. Many people have their weddings held during this time.

Huashan Festival

There are various Huashan, or “Flower Mountain,” festivals held in different Miao areas. Some are in August, and others are in January or May of the lunar calendar.

On that day, a pole is garnished with colorful flags and put at the heart of a playing field. At the top of the pole there is a small red bag with money inside. With a man announcing the beginning of the festival, a pole climbing games gets going. The man who can climb to the top of the pole first to take the pouch, while playing his Lusheng wind instrument, will get the reward. It's not easy to climb a pole and at the same time to play an instrument! The pole, made of peeled pine wood, is tall, smooth, and thin. The champion will become the admiration of other people, especially the girls.

During the festival, people also have other sports, such as archery and horse races held. Women show great interest in exhibiting their perfect sewing skills and the men are busy displaying their superior physical strength.

By singing love songs, youngsters will use this time to look for lovers. If they find someone they are interested in, they will give each other some presents, like a silver hairpin or waistband. Elderly people go to meet friends and express their opinions about farming. The festival lasts until late in the evening.

Sister Festival: Miao Valentine’s Day

The Miao Sister Festival is also called Miao Valentine’s Day, as it’s a holiday for single women to invite young men from other villages to meet. The festival occurs in mid-March on the lunar calendar.

On March 13th, girls go to select some particular leaves and flowers growing in the mountains to dye their food. Then they are busy with preparing colorful and sweet glutinous rice. There are five different colors mixed together in the rice. Green symbolizes their beautiful hometown, red indicates the prosperity of their village, yellow wishes for a golden harvest, blue or violet stands for wealth, and white implies their pure and true love.

The next day they go fishing to catch some fish and freshwater shrimp. In the afternoon they will be busy with preparing a luxurious meal including fish, duck, and duck eggs. Their meal can't lack the duck, because a swimming duck means the girls are able to meet men from the other side of the river.

In the evening, when the men finally come, they will dine together, then go outside to talk and sing songs to express their feelings. The girls will be sure to wear their most beautiful silver jewelry like silver bracelets, as this is a symbol of beauty and status in Miao culture.

Four days later, this Miao holiday is over. Many different kinds of activities and sports are held at this time, such as bullfight and horse races.

A basket of fish, meat and glutinous rice will be sent to the men by the girls before the men go back to their home. They will probably place some particular things in the basket to tell if they like the men or not. Cotton means they will miss the men who go back home. A pack of pine leaves suggests that they want men to send them some needles and thread as present. Pepper or garlic means the relationship won't work out.

The men will bring some silk in these baskets for the girls when they come again next year.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on May 5 of the lunar calendar, and thousands of people gather together to watch the exciting boat races. The competing teams row their boats in the shape of dragons on a river or lake, while drums are beat and loud firecrackers are set off from the banks.

April 8 Festival

The April 8th festival is held to remember the Miao’s hero Yanu, who died on this day while fighting against an invading tribe. The Miao will get together to hold traditional activities like playing Lusheng music, singing, and performing the lion dance.

In ancient times, the Chinese people celebrated the Winter Solstice Festival (Dong Zhi) by visiting relatives and friends, in much the same way as the Chinese Lunar New Year. There is customary feasting, and businesses will close up for the day. Glutinous floor balls known as “tang yuan” are consumed as a symbol of family unity and harmony on this day.

How do you define the winter solstice?

An astronomical word that defines the day of the year when the sun is farthest away from the equator is “solstice.” Solstices happen twice, once in the summertime and once in the wintertime and this results in either the longest day or shortest day out of the year. The time that this occurs depends on which hemisphere you are talking about.

A solstice is created when the earth tilts away from the sun for a particular hemisphere. While the earth is orbiting around the sun, it is also spinning on its axis. This tilting results in one hemisphere being nearer to the sun, causing the summer while the adjacent hemisphere is further away, causing the winter.

The word solstice is derived from “solstitium”, which is a Latin word. The word solstitium is derived from the Latin word “sol”, or sun, and “stitium”, which translates to stop. When the solstice occurs, the sun looks like it has done exactly that. It reaches nearly the same elevation at noon every day during the several days prior to and following the solstice.

The winter solstice for the northern hemisphere occurs on one of two dates: December 21st or 22nd every year and the sun will be shinning directly over the tropic of Capricorn. June 20th or 21st is the winter solstice for the southern hemisphere, which occurs when the sun is shinning directly over the tropic of Cancer.

The winter solstice marks the day of the year that has the shortest amount of daylight and the longest amount of night. This is the midpoint of winter for many culture’s calendars. Amazingly, in over three thousand years, the date of solstice has been moved by only a single day.

A lot of older civilizations observed the winter solstice as a period of being reborn, because the sun looks like it is regenerated and the daylight lasts longer.

Today, festivals of light are still celebrated by some cultures. In addition to the Chinese Dong Zhi festival, the Germanic cultures celebrate Yule and Hindus celebrate Diwali, a festival of light.

As in the Western region, food is a very important part of all of our celebrations. This is no different for the Chinese New Year celebration. Chinese New Year food is a huge part of the entire celebration and everyone notices the degree of cooking when this fabulous holiday rolls around. While Chinese New Years has been adopted and celebrated around the world, many people do not know that this fabulous holiday has actually been dubbed the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year.

The neat thing about the Chinese New Year is that food, banquets of food is served for fifteen days straight until the new lunar moon, for that is when the Chinese New Year happens. Food is a huge part of this tradition. In the states, caterers are brought in and serve many, many people at all sorts of celebrations, but back in China, many of the families cook all of their own foods and cook for many, many people.

There are a few foods that actually have a symbolic nature to them. For instance, the whole chicken can mean family togetherness, and this type of food given during the Chinese New Yearcan mean that the family will be together and happy throughout the entire year.

Noodles are another cuisine staple during the New Year. They are extremely important, and lots of symbolism and superstitions surround them. Noodles should always be served long and uncut. This symbolizes a long life. You can serve them any way you like – in soup, as a side dish, as a main course, or as an appetizer. Just make sure you do not cut them in half!

Other foods are significant during the New Year because of the way they sound. Literally, they are used because of the Chinese pronunciation of the word. Lettuce is a good example of this. In Cantonese, the word for it sounds fortuitous. Likewise, certain citrus fruits are served because the words for them sound like forebears of good fortune, such as “luck” and “wealth.”

Fish is also frequently served. It has several symbols attached to it. The Chinese word for fish is “yu.” It sounds like the words for terms of good fortune. As well, the fish itself is considered indicative of good luck. When it is served whole with both the head and tail in tact, it is indicative of the year’s good beginning and ending.
